The wall between the counter and the uppers does more for a Bristol kitchen than any other surface. Installed in a day or two, fixed price, counters untouched.
A kitchen backsplash is the highest-return surface in the room: it hides the wall behind the counter, protects it from grease and water, and sets the tone for everything else. In Bristol it is also the cheapest way to make a dated kitchen look deliberate.
Bristol's older kitchens are compact and often unchanged for decades: a single run of cabinets, a doorway at one end, and frequently a wall that is not plumb or is plaster over brick. Prep quality decides the outcome far more than the tile does.
| Choice | Installed band* | Best for in Bristol |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic subway | $ | Compact original kitchens — visually widens a short run and ages well. |
| Porcelain subway / tile | $$ | Daily-cook kitchens and rentals. Dense, easy-clean, hard to stain. |
| Zellige / handmade-look | $$–$$$ | Where the wall is the feature. Expect natural variation — that is the point. |
| Glass / stone mosaic | $$ | Accent strips and smaller splashes. More grout, more scrubbing. |
| Slab-look porcelain panel | $$$ | Big runs and full-height walls. Almost no grout, needs a careful setter. |

Most of a backsplash is not the tile. It is the outlet boxes brought flush with the new surface, the cuts wrapped around out-of-plumb walls that need floating before tile can sit flat, the inside corners kept square, and the space behind the range held to a consistent line. Get those wrong and the job reads as cheap no matter what tile you bought.
New counters, old wall.
The most common mismatch call in Bristol. The counters are fine and the wall is the previous owner's. Swapping just the splash ties the kitchen together for a fraction of a remodel. See removal & replacement.
Never had a splash.
Paint behind the stove, scrubbed too many times. A first splash is a straightforward job and one of the least disruptive things you can have done. Our process page shows the timeline.
Half-finished wall.
A splash that stops at an arbitrary point. We extend to full height or terminate it properly so it looks intentional. See full-height splash.
